Next New Media

A great type of new media would be a virtual tour guide. I propose this to be either an application loaded onto a device such as the I-phone or the I-pad or a separate device which uses GPS tracking to pinpoint the user's location. After doing so the virtual tour guide could reveal to the user either in pre-recorded audio format, or text format or both the notable sights of the location they're in. It will also serve as a guide for restaurants, hotels, transportation, etc. and provide a way to communicate with other tourists who are currently in that location. The user would also be able to specify his/her social networking preferences. For example if a German a tourist in Times Square wishes to learn more about the location, eat at the HollyWood restaurant, and maybe invite along a few other tourists visiting from Germany at Times Square to lunch, they could do so by using this app/device. The device could provide interesting historic information, directions to the restaurant and host an instant messaging service connecting other tourists currently at the same location  who are interested in socializing. This would allow for a more personalized experience when going abroad and a chance to explore sights outside the normal tour-routes as well as a way to make new friends.

  1. It would be even cooler if the guide would adjust to the language of the user...like translate signs and other things.

  2. I think this is a great idea Ilana! It would change the way social networking is among people in a same location.
